BBH

I looked into the work of the advertising agency BBH. It is a really big agency which has offices all around the world so it is very multicultural. Their adverts pay particular attention to the culture and fashions of the target markets.
Some work from BBH (Bartle Bogle Hegarty)

I think the music fits really well with the images in this advert. It makes it very dramatic and powerful.

This was for a conference in Shanghai and the advert takes into account popular art forms from there.

John Hegarty lecture

John Hegarty has created adverts for brands such as Levi, Audi, Boddingtons, K Shoes, Haagen Dazs and Xbox. It was really interesting to learn about his career and see all the campaigns he has designed for. Some advice he gave was "Tell the truth", which you need to be for legal reasons as you can't lie about a product, but you can twist the truth and tell it in an interesting way. He also said "be fearless" which I suppose you have to be to get your ideas out. You have to believe in them if you think they are good. He features a lot of fashionable youth culture in his adverts; a good example being the Lynx adverts.

I don't really like these adverts as I think they're a bit in poor taste, but then again I am not part of the market they are aiming at. The adverts are certainly memorable though.

This is probably one of his most famous adverts for Levi jeans.
This advert was for Haagen Dazs.

Other types of advertising...

I looked at various ways of placing advertis and here are some interesting examples I found:

Billboards

Magazine fold out

Adverts on lorries

Interactive/digital Billboard

Guerilla Advertising

It's always interesting going on the London Underground because of the vast amount of adverts everywhere. They have huge adverts all over the corridors and digital adverts up and down the escalators. I think having a digital advert like these in our campaign would be effective.

TV ads

Made by Fallon for Sony. The mix of the music and the colours makes this one of my favourite TV adverts ever. I also really liked their other adverts which shared a similar idea to this but were all very original, such as multi coloured plasticine rabbits and the paint exploding out of a building. They are all really memorable.

I like this advert mostly due to the horses! I think they make it memorable and it's very original, though it is one of those adverts where you can't always remember what it is for.

This was voted the best video game advert, featuring lots of cameos from various gaming characters. I think this really gains interest from gaming fans.

Horror films

For inspiration, I looked at some horror film posters. I think for our designs, we should use similar dark colours, with bright light, maybe from the headlights of the car, focusing on the main parts - like in The Exorcist poster.

Spooky

To make our adverts a bit different, we have decided to put a spooky, ghostly edge on them. I have looked up some spooky adverts and the most recent I found was for Phones 4 U.

I found out that this advert has received a lot of complaints for being too scary so we would have to make sure the advert isn't quite as scary/shown after the watershed.

More about the advert...

Here is a digital advert that was used to promote the London Dungeons. It was on the escalators on the London Underground and showed the woman turning into a zombie which was scaring children too much and was banned.

More about the advert...

This advert plays on how horrifiying it would be to know that would had killed a child by speeding. they use scare tactics to make the advert stick in your mind.

De-icer film

As part of our brief, we had to create a short film with no theme. This is what we made!

She’s not a moron, she’s your wife

We watched a video called “She’s not a moron, she’s your wife”, which was about how cleaning and cooking products were advertised to women.

One thing that stood out to me was a Keloggs advert where they were essentially blaming the wife for her husband failing at work, because she hadn’t given him any cereal before he went out. They were trying to make the wife feel guilty and therefore buy the cereal. I don’t think they would do that now as it would offend people and not do much good for the brand.

As time when on, they stopped aiming adverts just at women and included men too.

Developing ideas...

We have chosen to focus on the idea where you show what you can see when you are in a car if the windows are frosted up, and what you can see if you use the de-icer. We want to give it a more serious approach than a funny one. Here are some of the ideas for various situations that could be happening.

-Driving towards a cliff

- Horse Rider

- Deer jumping out

Other ideas include:
- Child running out in front of the car
- Cyclist turning
- Fallen tree
- Dead end
- Road works

De icer advert

This is the only de-icer advert I could find so it is likely de-icer hasn't particularly been advertised on a large scale before. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ve4w4EhQ_xM

Action Plan

I would say that one of my strengths is drawing, though I haven't been doing as much of it recently as I would like. I find it really hard however to draw using a graphics tablet on the computer, it feels so different from using a pencil! As creative technology is changing so quickly I think I should start trying to draw more on the computer to develop my skills there.

I think one of my weaknesses is not being aware of what is going on in the advertising world. I only tend to pay attention to advertisements on the television that stick in my mind due to the music or interesting content. I will subscribe to campaign magazine which is weekly and will broaden my knowledge of advertising campaigns in different media. The presentations we did made me realise I need to know more about advertising history so I will research on the internet and read some relevant books. I also need to improve presentation skills, which I hope will happen as we present more in the future.

I tend to go for the easy option with things when creating final pieces, so I think I need to be more adventurous and open minded. I hope to see the themes of my work getting broader in future projects.
