Poster

This is the first design we created for the poster. It features several people outside the town hall and I have placed light drawings over them using Photoshop to show the interaction with them.

With the font we used, I used the blending tools on Photoshop to create an outer glow around the text, therefore making it look like a light drawing itself. I then added the website and date in a simple and clear font.

After looking at the design, we felt it wasn't quite right. The light drawings didn't stand out as much as we wanted them to and having more than one instrument and person seemed to draw the attention away, so we decided to look at one of our other ideas and develop that further to see if it was more effective.

I used this photo for the poster, but I removed the people in the background so there was only one. I also darkened it up, as we took this photo in the afternoon when it was still light. I think this works better as a night time scene as the photos just generally came out better when there was more light.

This is our final design. I think the use of just one object works much better. We got Sophie to pose for us and I think having her pose and looking happy, rather than just having passers by, works much better and makes the whole event seem more exciting. I also think the grey background works much better in making the light drawings stand out than the yellowy background in the previous design.

I had trouble aligning the text at the top. The word Arise seems out of place as it isn't centralised over the arch, but if you centralise it, the words Unite and Alight look out of place too. I think the poster would have looked better without this strap line, maybe with the photo being moved up so the top 3/4 of the page was focusing on just the light drawing. However, as it was in the brief we felt we had to include it.

I think this poster works well to publicise Alight. The light drawings interacting with the person on the front suggests that people can be involved in the events. The light drawings also compliment the name of the event and leave a bright and positive image in your mind.

Stickers

We designed a range of stickers to be given out to advertise the event. We tried them using the buildings for background but we felt they were much more effective having just a simple black background and making the text stand out. We also tried out many different shapes but felt the guitar would be the most appealing if we were giving out the stickers to people in the street/at schools etc...

We decided to have four different colours, so children might enjoy collecting them and it could create more of a buzz at schools, or they can choose a favourite colour which appeals to them.

Poster for Facebook Competition

We designed a poster for a facebook competition to promote the event. People are asked to submit their own light drawings and the best one wins tickets to one of the events. When someone clicks onto the Alight facebook page, this would be the first thing that they see.

This is another idea I had for the poster, but I don't think it is as interesting, mostly because there are no people in the photo to interact with the light drawing.

Twitter/Youtube Background

Jade and I digitally created some instruments, then used Photoshop to give them a neon effect making them look like light drawings. We then used this as the background for the Youtube and Twitter pages.

Here are the links to our social media pages.

I really think the social media pages work well for this project as the budget is limited and social media is cheap. It is also a very good way of connecting with lots of different people and allowing them to interact, which is what we wanted to focus on.

Photos

Here are some of the initial photos we took of our chosen buildings, the Town hall and the City hall. Unfortunately, my camera couldn't cope with the lack of light and my hand moving so the photos came out blurry, but we were able to plan out the general composition of the poster.

We decided to borrow a tripod from University and this made the photos much sharper. Over the next few days, we went back at different times of the day and took more photos until we had one we liked.

Light Drawings

Over Christmas, I created some light drawings using some musical instruments I have at home to trace around. It was quite hard to get it looking realistic, getting the lines straight etc... but I am pleased with the final outcomes. Here are a selection of some of the best ones.

Unfortunately, my brothers electric drum kit doesn't really look like a proper drum kit and due to all the detail, it was too hard to create into a decent light drawing.

I think light drawings work best when they are quite simple but the shape of the object is very obvious. That is why I think the acoustic guitar works better than something like the keyboard.

It was quite difficult getting the shapes smooth and consistent - like the drums. However, when I did manage to get a smooth outline to the instruments the effect was just how I wanted it. You have to slow down to try and to get the shape exactly right, but the slower you do it, the more the camera is exposed to the light making the image a bit blurry, so you have to get the balance just right.
